With the strengthening of China’s comprehensive national strength and international competitiveness, the world has turned its eyes to China, which provides very favorable conditions to China’s development. Multilateral exchanges and cooperation between China and the world have become more frequent. However, opportunities and challenges coexist, conflicts and misunderstandings are inevitable in the world. The development of China and communication between China and other countries will be influenced if lack of efficient exchanges. Therefore, if China wants the world to have a correct and comprehensive understanding of it, devoting on accurate translation of official documents might be a good choice. The translation accuracy of Chinese official documents and whether the translation can overcome cultural differences is a double-edged sword for China. Here, the author focuses on the Chinese government work report, on the basis of Nida’ s functional equivalence translation theory, to explore the translation of vocabulary with Chinese characteristic words in official documents, to summarize the translating strategies the Chinese Work Report utilized, and to conduct comparative study between the English and Chinese versions.The Chinese Work Report is an official document, issued by Chinese Government, compiled by professionals under the organization of the government, with high value of research. The Chinese Government Report can guide us better for our English translation learning. Meanwhile, with analyzing English versions of Chinese Government Work Report, we can come up with questions, discover new problems and summarize them, which will prevent us from making mistakes like Chinglish, mechanical counterpart, using improper words and so on for our translation learners’further translation work.At the same time, considering that Nida’s functional equivalence theory has extremely profound influence on translation studies in both China and the world, it guides the study in aspects of translation theory and practice. Based on Nida’s functional equivalence theory, I hope to have further acquaintances about translation strategies and skills, to master the methods of translating political texts, to have some assistances about my future work as a translator in analyzing Chinese and English versions of Chinese Government Work Report from 2013 to 2015.The thesis can be divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction that gives us a general view about this thesis from four aspects, including the background, scope and importance of the study, its methods, the innovation and the structure of the thesis. The second chapter is literature review, involving related studies on Nida’s functional equivalence in western countries as well as in China, and related researches on Chinese Government Work Report in China. The second part has two considerations: similar views in China on Nida’s functional equivalence theory and three stages of Nida’s theory in China. The third chapter is going to explain the generating and spreading of Nida’s functional equivalence theory briefly. This chapter also cover the definition of functional equivalence, its contribution, its deficiency, and reasons why I choose this theory as analyzing object. The author tries to discuss the feasibility and innovation of utilizing western theory to translate Chinese Government texts.Chapter four is the key part in this thesis. This chapter plans to give an summarized data after researching the characteristic word on basis of Nida’s functional equivalence theory in three years English and Chinese versions of Chinese Government Report from 2013 to 2015, including the vocabulary on politics, economics, culture, people’s livelihood and of other aspects. Translation strategies are going to be shown in each chapter, which will be helpful to have a more intuitive understanding about the Chinese characteristic words produced in the Work Report.The last chapter is the summary of the paper. Conclusions of general descriptions and discussions on translating Chinese characteristic words will be made. What is more, some values and limitations of the current study will be indicated and the suggestions for further studies on translating Chinese government texts are proposed. I hope to grasp readers’ eyes and interests by studying translating Chinese government texts based on certain western translation theory.
