A Report On Interpreting Of Pre-appriaisal For World Bank Loan For Jiaozuo Green Transport And Road Safety Improvement Projects

This report is based on the author’s experience as an interpreter for a transportation-related international meeting in which the guiding principle for interpreting is the Skopos theory. Skopos theory was established in1970s by German linguist and translation scholar Hans Vermeer. According to Hans Vermeer, the top-ranking rule in translation is the skopos rule. Translation strategies and methods vary with different skopos. In other words, translation strategies and methods are determined by the skopos of the text. Skopos theory provides a good explanation for the debates between foreignization and domestication and between equivalence in forms and equivalence in functions. Whether to choose foreignization or domestication is determined by the skopos. In the translation and interpreting process, focusing on the skopos of business negotiation, namely accurate and efficient information exchange, the author use skopos theory as his guiding principle, successfully addressed many tricky problems and secured satisfying results.This report consists of five parts. The first chapter gives a detailed introduction of the task which includes the client, the direct users of the interpreting service and the information of the task. The second chapter is process description which depicts the activities occurring in the whole process including preparation, discussions about the project and route inspection. The third and fourth chapter is about the guiding principle:skopos theory, and how it guides the author in the process of choosing translation strategies. The fifth chapter is about client feedbacks and the author’s own self-reflections. In the final chapter, the author concluded that skopos theory is very useful in guiding translation and interpreting practices and research on this aspect should be strengthened.
