The Translation Of Passive Sentences In Marriage Act1961of Australia

This is a translation report on passive sentences. Passive sentences are the basic structureof the language, which are widely used in Chinese and English. The translation of passivesentences, to a large extent, determines the quality of the whole text, and causes obstacles tothe readers. The materials of legal documents translated by the author covers broadly,including bill of complaint, answer to complaint, petitions, legislative texts, such as MarriageLaw and so on. There are quite a lot of passive sentences in the legal documents, especially inMarriage Act1961.The author has selected some typical sentences to discuss the types andtranslation strategies of passive sentences in legal documents.Firstly, the author introduces the importance of passive sentences in the legal documentsand makes a brief introduction of types of the passive sentences. Then, the author takes someexamples from Marriage Act1961to explore three translation strategies: translating thepassive sentences into active sentences, translating passive sentences into passive sentences,and translating the passive sentences into sentences without subjects. Finally, lessons andexperience learned from this translation are discussed.
