A Report On Business Interpretation In The Fifteenth International Fruit/vegetable/food Exposition

Frequent business cooperation generates a huge demand on domestic businessinterpreters. Business liaison interpretation, with its variety in modes and features, isattracting more and more talents. But the characteristics of business English are challenging tobusiness interpreters. This report is based on the author’s business liaison interpretationexperience at the Fifteenth International (Yantai) Fruit/Vegetable/Food Exposition. Itdescribes three interpretation tasks in this exposition and analyzes the features of businessinterpretation from two perspectives: brevity of business language and etiquette of businessliaison interpretation, and puts forward some corresponding strategies.Business liaison interpretation bears not only the features of other kinds of interpretation,but also its unique language and non-language features. This report first introduces thebackground of the Fifteenth International (Yantai) Fruit/Vegetable/Food Exposition, theauthor’s pre-interpreting preparation and the background of three interpretation activities.Combined with the features of business liaison interpretation, the two major difficultiesencountered in the interpretation process are analyzed in detail. They are how to achievebrevity of business language and how to follow etiquette of business liaison interpretation. Asfor the brevity of business liaison interpretation, five interpretation strategies are proposedincluding using phrases and short sentences, avoiding repeating and meaningless information,integrating the scattered information, omitting personal pronouns in phatic sentences andde-verbalizing source language. As for the etiquette of business liaison interpretation,etiquette skills are put forward at four aspects which are postures and gestures, eye-contactwith speakers and audience, distance and space and communicative style.Based on this experience, the author learned the importance of business liaisoninterpretation’s features, and the specific strategies of brevity and etiquette of business liaisoninterpretation will be applied flexibly in the future tasks. Meanwhile, the author hopes thisstudy could contribute to other business interpretation tasks, researching and teaching activities in relevant field.
