The schema theory believes that when people receive new information, they first try to make connections between new information with the existed schema in their mind. If the new information can activate the existed schema, people will react more quickly to the new information and if not, the reaction will slow down or baffled. When the new information is similar with the existed schema, the existed schema will be more stable. Otherwise, the existed schema will adjust itself or even reconstruct a new one. This theory has many common with the process in consecutive interpreting. In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter also needs the help of schema to accelerate the speed of reaction and improve the accuracy of new information. This report aims to study the effect of schema on the Chinese-English consecutive interpreting quality. 10 second-year postgraduates majoring in MTI in Guangdong University of Foreign Studies are selected as experiment subjects. They take part in a comparative experiment, questionnaire and interview which are designed for this purpose. Through those three parts, it is hoped to find out the effect that schema theory can have on the Chinese-English consecutive interpreting quality. The Chinese-English consecutive interpreting materials are about the work summarization of the United Nations Security Council. The experiment are performed in the following steps: 1. Selection of subjects and interpreting materials; 2. Doing Chinese-English consecutive interpreting which will be recorded, questionnaire and one-to-one interview; 3. Transcribing the output of the Chinese-English consecutive interpreting materials and interview and collecting experiment data; 4. Analyzing data and drawing conclusions. This report tentatively put forward some suggestions to both interpreting teaching and training. It is hoped trainee interpreters could increase their interpreting skills through learning schema theory.
