With the constant development of economy and society, tourism has become a pillarindustry in China. The rise of China’s international status and cultural power hascontributed to the rapid spread of Chinese culture, among which the beautiful landscapesand historic sites fascinate numerous western travelers. Tibet, with its unique naturalbeauty and history-related charm, has become the dream destination of travelers homeand abroad. A great variety of travel guidebooks have emerged and the translation ofthese books has a certain impact on the diffusion of local culture and development oflocal tourism. This is a translation project report on the translation of Tibet’s Charms in Travelthroughout China——Tibet published by China Tourism Press. The three parts chosen bythe translator are an introduction of Tibet’s traditional ethnic culture including TibetanBuddhism, Tibetan robes, Tibetan drama, Tibetan medicine and the eight must-see scenicspots in Tibet. The paper mainly discusses the C-E translation of tourism text based on thetranslation theory of Newmark. As the report reveals, the tourism text is a kind ofcomprehensive text which features vocative function as well as informative function withthe vocative function as the major goal. Therefore, texts of this type should be translatedwith the combined guide of communicative translation theory and semantic translationtheory. Even for the same tourism text, which is composed of parts with differentemphases, we should also adopt different translation methods to deal with the differentparts. For the vocative-oriented and informative-oriented parts such as introduction oftourist attractions, communicative translation method should be adopted; for theexpressive oriented parts such as narrative cultural explanation especially with literarystyle, semantic translation method should be adopted; Thus we can better convey theChinese culture to foreign readers and enhance communication and understanding with the outside world. At the same time, in order to cater to the readers, the translator shouldtake the readers’ response into consideration and flexibly handle the cultural elementsespecially the cultural gapped words with various translation methods such as annotation, addition, reduction, analogy, vibration and so on to convey the contents and culturalimplication of the source text to western readers to the maximum. In addition, this translation project is of considerable significance in examining, enriching and developing communicative translation theory via the translator’s practicalapplication in tourism text translation. At the same time, it is a good attempt to translateethnic cultural tourism texts and has provided a good example for translation reference.
