Owing to the development of economic globalization, various international affairs and events in economy, technology, tourism as well as cultural fields have been held both home and abroad, and the success of such exchanges somewhat depends on the quality of the interpreter and the consecutive interpreting produced during the communicative process because it plays a vital role as the media for multilateral communication. Therefore, the interpreter, as the multitasking messenger of information and culture, also takes a great responsibility in consecutive interpreting for its particularity and complexity, including massive audience, long-time span, large amount of information and short intervals, which require a comprehensive application on skills of listening comprehension, long-term and short-term memory, note-taking and source-language production. In this case, application of Effort Models is of instructive significance to the multitasking taken by the interpreter during consecutive interpreting projects.Taking 2014 American Leading Private Middle Schools Educational Forum (hereinafter referred to as ALPMSEF) as an example, this paper analyzes the application of Effort Models to consecutive interpreting and consists of four parts. Firstly, this paper reviews the basic information about this project, and introduces some concepts and theories relevant to this project, including consecutive interpreting and Effort Models. After that, in the main body of this report, the author lays special stress on the application of Gile’s Effort Models to analyze examples by pointing out problems encountered in this project like memory deficiency note-taking and non-verbal coordination, and then offers deverbalization, attention coordination and syntactic linearity as three correspondent solutions. In the end, based on the feedback from the employer and clients as well as the interpreter herself, this paper reaches a post-interpreting summary that a long-term accumulation of comprehensive knowledge and a solid foundation of bilingual competence and non-verbal abilities are critical to the proper coordination of all the efforts involved in consecutive interpreting.A conclusion can be drawn from this project that a positive attitude toward learning, teamwork, and sound foundation of interpreting theories as well as proper strategies employed in allocating all the efforts used in consecutive interpreting can not only efficiently deliver the real intention of the speaker by enhancing the accuracy, fluency and formality of the target language, but also improve the communication and mutual understanding between China and foreign countries, and, additionally, can promote the development of various kinds of interpreting projects against the backdrop of globalization. It is the author’s sincere hope that this paper, with its research on existed problems and learned experience, can bring some reference and enlightenment to the application of Effort Models to consecutive interpreting in the future.
