Forestry in Finland is well-developed and forest covers 75% of the Republic of Finland.On the occasion of CIFF 2015(China International Furnish Fair),Finpro launched a nation-wide publicity,Wood from Finland Seminar,to promote their wood products in C hina.Nevertheless,language barriers prevent two sides from communicating and therefore,interpreters are the indispensable role on the spot.In this report,based on the author's consecutive interpreting experience – Wood from Finland Seminar,the author analyzes problems encountered and demonstrates skills and strategies employed to solve the problems in the consecutive interpreting in the hope to gain reference and enlightenment,which will be helpful to the author's future career and might be beneficial to teachers and students majoring in interpreting.The author develops this report in four chapters.In C hapter One,the author briefly reveals the background information of this seminar,the requirement of the employer and the assignment that the interpreter received.In Chapter Two,the author details the preparation made before the task,including the glossary building,the background information research and the review and further study of various interpreting theories.Glossary building helps the interpreter acquire the basic concept in the field of forestry,construction and wood products and lay a solid foundation for the interpreter to probe into the bilingual material.Background information research facilitates the interpreter forming a clear picture of the specialized fields.By reviewing interpreting theories,the interpreter learns how to adjust his working conditions based on the working environment.In Chapter Three,the author illustrates four types of challenges in the task,accent recognition,irregular pauses,unfavorable note-taking conditions as well as chasms between two languages,and the interpreter's corresponding solutions,pronunciation association,chunking,blurring and confirmation as well as deverbalization.O f course,in some cases,more than one skill or strategy will be involved in tackling a single difficulty.In Chapter Four,the author reflects on his performance according to the feedback and assessment from the employer.In addition,the author concludes that interpreters should prioritize the language proficiency,especially the grammatical knowledge,to analyze the sentences with complex structures.Meanwhile,interpreters should be equipped with a wide spectrum of encyclopedia knowledge to fulfill interpreting tasks with various topics.Based on the working performance,the author concludes three elements in interpreting,the language proficiency,certain knowledge in specialized fields and application of interpreting theories.The author hopes that summarized obstacles and employed skills and coping strategies in this report could serve as reference for interpreters who will engage in consecutive interpreting,or for teaching of consecutive interpreting.
