Implicit And Explicit Memory Effect Of Network Information

The twenty-first Century is the era of internet information, more and more people cannot live without the internet, the discipline of psychology is also taking more and more attention on internet, but mainly focuses on society, personality, learning, decision making and addiction, etc. Few on the research of normal user’s cognitive ability influenced by the use of internet. It was not until 2011, the first powerful essay that about the influence of internet on memory was published in the journal science by Sparrow et al. the influence of internet on cognition was concerned.However, until now, it still exists a lack of the research of the influence of internet information on cognition. Although the study by Sparrow confirms that internet changes the way of people’s memory, it didn’t explore the deeper cognitive reason. The internet environment, that is an irreversible trend of history that all of us must adapt ourselves to it, just like our ancestors adapt themselves to the nature that full of natural selection, in this sense, internet may leads to the change of our cognition in the level of evolution. In order to explore that internet is making our memories had a depth of cognitive change or not, and bases on the relative independent ability of implicit memory and explicit memory, I conducted two studies are as follows:In study 1, we used Stroop variant task and Perceptual identification paradigm to explore the implicit memory superiority effects of internet vocabulary. It’s a within-subject design with single factor and two levels (normal vocabulary and internet vocabulary),34 Central China Normal University students were taking part in the experience. The results indicated that the reaction time on the network vocabulary is significantly higher than the non network vocabulary in Stroop variant task, however, in the stage of perceptual identification task, the reaction time of internet vocabulary is obviously shorter than normal vocabulary, and accuracy of internet vocabulary is notably higher than normal vocabulary.In study 2, we used properties identification task and processed dissociation paradigm to explore the explicit memory superiority effects of internet vocabulary. It’s a within-subject design with single factor and two levels (normal vocabulary and internet vocabulary),35 Central China Normal University students were taking part in the experience. The results indicated that the reaction time on the network vocabulary is significantly lower than the non network vocabulary in properties identification task, but the accuracy of internet vocabulary is notably higher than normal vocabulary, and the automatic extractive components of internet vocabulary is notably higher than normal vocabulary, the conscious extractive components of the two kinds are with no significant difference.The results of two studies showed that the memory advantage effect of network vocabulary, confirmed the change of network on memory, but this conclusion needs further more studies from the age and network situation angle.
