Due to the frequently increased exchanges in politics, economy and culture among countries in the world, the need of using the experience of other countries for reference in advanced science and technology is irresistible. Hence, the translation of foreign materials of science and technology has set off a heat in China. Currently, the research and analysis about English-Chinese translation of the scientific texts are generally concerned with technical terms, logical expressions, and structural features. In order to make the versions achieve the result of distinctness, vividness and intimacy, translators must fully understand the syntactic features of scientific texts and then take appropriate translation strategies. Only in this way can translators accurately convey the information of the original text and transmit the essence of science and technology. During the process of trial-translating meteorological materials issued by Central Weather Bureau(CWB), the translator applies some appropriate translation strategies and deepens the understanding of different translation theories, especially Nida’s theory of functional equivalence, which further improves the ability in English-Chinese translation. Through this practice, the translator has deeply realized that translators should standardize the use of terminology, avoid errors and pretermissions while translating English for science and technology(EST), so that the versions can be made approachable to read. Whether English-Chinese translation or Chinese-English translation, translators are required to finish the task after fully understanding the original text and make the accurate version, clear style, fluent text and standard format possible. This report is mainly in accordance with the translation practice task of the materials cited in the appendix, which has a total of 14,002 Chinese characters. It is basically divided into three parts: The Introduction, Main body and Conclusion. The first part is the Introduction, the importance of EST and some related knowledge of meteorological translation are listed. The second part is the Main body, which is made up of three chapters:In the first chapter, the translator describes the translation task. The background, significance and value of choosing this text, the nature of the selected materials and the evaluation of the overall task are introduced. The translator also introduces the major guiding principle for this report—Nida’s translation theory of functional equivalence. In the second chapter, the translator describes the translation process. After a fully comprehension of the translation task, some preparation work should be fully done, some problems have been encountered during the translation process and some proofreading work should be performed after accomplishing the task.In the third chapter, the translator makes the case analysis. Some problems have been summed up and some solutions have been discussed to different translation problems. The last part is the Conclusion. The translator summarizes the unresolved problems, expounds related thinking, and indicates the great influence on her future learning. This practice task not only makes the translator learn more related knowledge about scientific English, but also widens her views. What’s more, what she has experienced makes her even more in awe of the wonders and mysteries of nature and gives her motivation to continue moving forward.
