Report On Chinese Translation Of The Excerpts In The Presidents Fact Book

The Presidents Fact Book written by Roger Matuz is a comprehensive handbook to the major accomplishments and events of their terms, triumphs, and tragedies of every president. And it contains the unexpected, featuring little-known facts about each president such as their hobbies, ethnic background, odd behaviors and outlandish penchants. It is a biographical literature book characterized by historicity and literariness. Therefore it is quite challenging to preserve its historicity and literariness in translation process.During the translation process, there are some obstacles which is divided into two parts:translation of words, such as culturally-loaded words, idioms, sayings, specific political words, programs, movies as well as TV plays names etc; the adjustment of sentence structure. This report solves the above problems by applying different translation strategies, like literal translation, free translation and structure borrowing translation. Meanwhile, it also deals with adjustment of sentence structure from three categories, conversion of words, translation of passive voice and negation in translation. This paper also summarizes and describes the inspirations as well as some regrets in order to lend some insights into translation in the future.
