A Translation Report Of The Sixth Chapter Of Intercultural Communication In Contexts

In the 21 st century, intercultural communication is unprecedently frequent and continuously furthering. Its knowledge has become necessary for people in their daily life, an inevitable fact everyone must face. Recently, great achievements have been made in intercultural communication studies. With the instructor’s help, this author translated a chapter of Intercultural Communication in Contexts to fulfill her task as required in the MTI program. Reviewing research methods for intercultural communication, this author decided to adopt the dialectic approach. This book, in plain language, is well suited for public reading. For it is less complicated theoretically and has many cases about society and history.This author translated the sixth chapter of book: Language and Intercultural Communication, which integrates researches in social science approach, hermeneutics and criticism. The sixth chapter is mainly an informative text according to Newmark’s text typology--- the main body part is written to transfer knowledge to the public in a rigorous style and cases are about idioms and daily stories in a more vivid and fun language. This translator needs to use different translating methods for the main body and the cases to reach the best effect expressed by the authors. The translator mainly applied Nida’s theory of functional equivalence translation, supplemented by Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation methods in the process of translating. Finally, this thesis concluded experiences in the translation and what is needed to perfect her translating.
