With the rapid development of overseas Chinese teaching, more and more students come to China to study Chinese in colleges and universities, meanwhile the development of Confucius Institute offer more chances to students who cannot go to China and do want to study Chinese. This essay, which is based on teaching practice of the author in Barcelona Confucius Institute, focuses on advanced Chinese courses and comes up some suggestions about how to improve teaching contents of this level.Now, Overseas Chinese teaching still focuses on beginning and middle level lessons, the needs of studying advanced Chinese is way much less than it of former two levels. Moreover, textbooks and other teaching materials, which are specialized for senior class, are heavily not enough. Some textbooks are only translated into English, not even in Spanish or French (these language are also used world widely). Therefore the conflicts between textbooks and teaching plans are the first motivation of this essay. Here are the conflicts:Firstly, most of passages in the textbook are out of time. Textbooks once are published, they can’t contain latest news or articles, therefore, it cannot meet the wish that students want to know more about modern China society. Secondly, the textbook is full of written words with high literariness. Some articles in the textbooks of high-level class are too difficult for foreign students to understand, the words it uses or patterns of sentences are not common in oral speaking or daily life, which leave a useless impression to learners.Thirdly, the textbook doesn’t fit teacher’s plan. Normally, teaching’s objectives are decided by teaching textbook, courses’ outline, as well as students’ requirements and needs. So when two of them go against each other, teachers have to make a balance. It’s different from the students who study in China, students overseas are lack of motivations from outside, like peers pressure or exams. Most of them are willing continue study one of the most difficult languages in the world, simply because they feel interested. Therefore, teachers have to pay more attention on students’ needs. That’s why instead just following the textbook, teachers should add more contents into the class.All in all, I, myself, strongly believe that it’s necessary to put complements into the class to meet students’ needs. This essay will show three typical teaching cases and analyze the teacher’s behavior to see how to improve advanced Chinese class. The three cases respectively shows how the teacher take advantages of extra materials to improve teaching effects. There are five chapters in the essay. At first, it gives a brief introduction about how and why the writer chooses this topic and what other scholars achieved in this field and their suggestions.Chapter One introduces basic information about high-level class in Barcelona Confucius Institute, and problems both the teacher and students have.Chapter Two, Chapter Three and Four respectively displays three teaching cases which are the main part of the essay. Chapter Two gives an example of adding materials of Chinese traditional culture; Chapter Three is the case about how to choose extra reading materials based on articles in the textbook; and Chapter Four shows how to bring news or topical issues into class. In this part, the writer discusses which topic teachers should choose and how to lead students to discuss it. All of these cases are not just simply described, but analyzed from different perspectives, such as students’ reactions and their homework, activities that organized by the teacher, etc.In Chapter Five, it concludes advantages and disadvantages of these cases and give some suggestions about overseas senior Chinese teaching. It also points out some shortages of the essay to help further researches.
