Appellation is one of the important parts in language system, which plays an irreplaceable role in interpersonal interaction. Learning and using Chinese appellations is hard but important for foreign students. But from the books, the situation of teaching and the attentions of foreign students themselves are all far than enough. Foreign students who study Chinese are not only learn pronunciation, words and grammar, the more important thing is to develop the level of Chinese and improve the communicative ability of Chinese 70 master the pragmatic rules of Chinese appellations will not only reflect that foreign students are understanding and recognition of Chinese culture, but also promote the daily communicative activities without a hitch. Foreign students if used incorrectly Chinese Appellation in daily interpersonal relationships, it may cause predicament between communication sides in the beginning. It will affect the communication of information and block it. It also can hit the confidence and the enthusiasm of the foreign students.Based on the reasons above, I think it is necessary to give the systemic and effective teaching of Chinese appellations to foreign students. But because they are from different countries and the structure of their mother tongue is complex. So I chose to take the foreign students whose mother tongue is English for an example to analyses and research. Firstly, I divide Chinese appellations into two parts, one is kinship terms and the other is social address terms. I ontology research on them respectively and explain the question about what the Chinese appellation is. Then I do the contrastive study on the system of Chinese and English appellations. I do the research in order to find the similarities and differences between them and to seek the reasons of mistakes the foreign students make while using the Chinese appellations. I make a questionnaire survey on the foreign students, in order to collect theunderstanding of the Chinese kinship terms, the using of the Chinese social address terms and the thought of the situation about teaching and learning the Chinese appellations. Through many aspects of analysis, I put forward some suggestions about how to teach the Chinese appellations. I hope it can catch the teachers’ and students’ attention on Chinese appellations and provide reference suggestions on the teaching of Chinese appellations.
