Since entering the 21 st century, the international influence of Chinese develops deeper and deeper with China’s rising international status. As the number of people who come to China for study or work increases rapidly, the development of teaching Chinese as a foreign language has been more vigorous these days. At present, there are two main types of teaching Chinese as a foreign language: collective classroom teaching and one-to-one private lessons. The vast majority of people would choose the traditional classroom teaching, the research of this field is relatively mature. While the business people or their family members who come to work in China are keen on one-to-one private lessons. In recent years, as more and more scholars begin to pay close attention to the one-to-one teaching mode, the research of one-to-one private lessons also increases rapidly.Since mid-September 2015, the author has given one-to-one private lessons of Chinese to a15-year-old American girl for three months at Beijing ShuRen-Ribet Private School in Beijing for three months. Based on the learners’ characteristics, learning goals, learning habits, according to constructivism teaching theory, humanism teaching theory and the theory of second language teaching, the author designs the teaching of The Traffic in Beijing.The thesis is divided into four chapters, and mainly covers the following contents:The first chapter is introduction and elaborates the background and significance of the paper,and the literature review which includes : theory of teaching Chinese as a foreign language,current research of Chinese comprehensive course, one-to-one private lessons of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.The second chapter describes the necessity of the one-to-one teaching design of the American high school students in China, mainly from the three aspects of the basis of teaching design, its characteristics and principles.The third chapter is the main body of this thesis, the author designs "The Traffic in Beijing" base on real cases and personal experience. The course has three periods and is designed into three parts, which shows the Chinese one-on-one teaching content of the American high school students in China.The fourth chapter is the summary and reflection on the teaching design.
