A Practice Report On Interpreting The Documentary Internet Age (Episode 4 And Episode 8)

With the development of high technology, especially in today’s age with rapid development of the internet, the internet affects all sectors of human society. However, there are few English documentaries about the internet age, and there is no English version domestically. Considering the important influence of this documentary on people’s life, interpreting it into English has the good practical and certain pioneering significance. This interpreting report, through the consecutive interpretation of the documentary Internet Age (Episode 4 and Episode 8), aims to analyze linguistic errors occurring in the interpretation and find out solutions with the interpretive theory. The author hopes to provide certain reference for interpreting similar subjects.This thesis consists of three parts:introduction, main body and conclusion. The first part is the introduction. In this part, the reason, research status, realistic significance and application value of this chosen subject are discussed as well as problems to be solved in this practice. The second part is the main body, which consists of three chapters. Chapter One is the task description. In this chapter, the interpretive theory is introduced first. Then, the content of the chosen documentary as well as basic qualities required for interpreters in the consecutive interpretation are discussed. Chapter Two is the process description. The collection and understanding of background information as well as summarization of glossaries in the preparation stage are introduced in this chapter. Then, items which should be noted as well as the control of quality in the interpreting process are discussed. Chapter Three is the core part of this thesis. Errors occurring in the interpreting process like stuck phenomenon, lengthy interpretation, stiff transformation from Chinese to English language structure and improper understanding of the source language are analyzed first and then the corresponding interpreting strategies and principles are discussed to properly solve them under the guidance of interpretive theory. The last part is the conclusion. The whole content above is summarized and the main purpose of this report is pointed out. By analyzing and summarizing the whole interpreting process, the valuable experience is gathered to provide certain reference to interpreters for similar interpreting jobs in the future.
