A Report On Whispered Interpreting For Visiting To Show Long 2015

The author was commissioned by Yantai Investment Development Board with the simultaneous interpreting task for the activity of Visiting to Show Long 2015. This report bases on the whispered interpreting for the speech given by the Chairman of Show Long and discusses the problems that the author has confronted and strategies she has adopted under the guidance of theory of “Effort Models”.In the task review, the author describes the pre-interpreting analysis and preparation. The pre-interpreting analysis is mainly about the preparation of interpreting theory and strategies, including the definition and characteristics of whispered interpreting and the employment of Effort Models to address difficulties. Then, the author briefly describes the pre-interpreting preparation and interpreting process. In the part of case analysis, the author chooses two typical difficulties that she encountered during the task, namely, acoustic difficulty, difficulties of high delivery speed and density of information, and elaborates how to solve these difficulties by maximizing concentration, controlling volume of voice and using strategies, like syntactic linearity,omission, anticipation, summarization and simplification to help her allocate interpreting efforts effectively to achieve a successful interpreting.After the analysis of the entire task, the author summarizes:(1) It is of great importance for interpreters to make a good pre-interpreting preparation under the circumstance of whispered interpreting. Because of working without any script, the interpreter needs to prepare well before the event and build up enough encyclopedia knowledge to cope with various topics in the speaker’s speech.(2) In whispered interpreting, there are no electronic equipment and sound-proof booth to help interpreter understand the source language clearly. The interpreter must keep a constant full concentration and properly control the volume of voice so as to hear and understand the speaker clearly. The interpreter can also use certain strategies like syntactic linearity,omission, anticipation, summarization and simplification to allocate interpreting effortseffectively and save the efforts of producing target language and put more efforts on the listening and analyzing so as to encounter the difficulties of high rate of delivery and density of information.
