How To Accurately Reproduce The Images Of Characters?

Lonesome Dove is a western novel of America. In this novel, the author depicts a living western region with reality and objectivity. As soon as it was published, this novel ranked first among the bestsellers in New York Times for a number of consecutive weeks. And it also won the Pulitzer Prize in 1986.In literary creation, character description is the main task for an author. Among the three elements (characters, plot and environment) of a novel, characterization is the core. Therefore, in the process of translation, the translator would not reproduce the characters as accurately as possible without a deeper understanding and reproduction of characterizations in the original text. It was guided by Eugene A. Nida’s functional equivalence theory in the part of translating practice. Based on this practice, the writer focused on how to reproduce characters as accurately as possible from the original text.This report is divided into four parts, namely task description, procedure description, case analysis and conclusion. In the case analysis part, the writer made a primary discussion on how to accurately reproduce characters in novel translation from the graphological, lexical and syntactic perspectives with stylistics as a tool. At graphological level, the writer paid great attention to the italicized words and punctuation; at lexical level, the writer focused on the words with affective meaning and stylistic meaning; at syntactic level, the writer mainly discussed the translation of elliptical sentence. All of the above discussions were of great significance to vividly reproduce the characters of the original text. Through this report, in order to reproduce the characters from the original novel to the most degree, the writer concludes some methods of reproducing characters, such as addition, literal translation, free translation, conversion and so on. Through this practice, the writer summarizes a series of translation methods and makes some supplements to Eugene A. Nida’s functional equivalence theory. The writer maintains that during the process of translation practice, translators should give high attention to the stylistic features of language while adhering to the semantic equivalence and stylistic equivalence in order to achieve the equivalence between the source text and the target text as much as possible.
