Chinese people’s need for information is growing rapidly as China is deepening its reform and opening up. As an important means of information dissemination, news plays an increasingly important role in common Chinese people’s lives. Currently, the booming of the Internet causes the ever-increasing frequency of trans-national cooperation as well as international conflicts. It is necessary, therefore, to learn some important international political events. Nowadays, most mainstream media in the world are English-language media, or adopt English as one of their main working languages, so English-Chinese news trans-editing is essential when it comes to the idea that international news should be readily available to Chinese news readers. This report is based on my work of trans-editing political news. During late 2014 and early 2015, I worked for the political and military channel of the News Trans-editing Platform, which was managed by Huanqiu.com, a famous Chinese news website. I trans-edited in total 34 political and military news reports from English to Chinese, having the translations published on-line at Huanqiu.com. This report is based on the trans-editing of 16 political news reports with the total number of 12022 Chinese Characters.English political news differs from Chinese political news in the format and wording of the news headline, the function and length of the news lead, and the lexical feature, sentence pattern, and voice of the news body. These differences pose challenges to the trans-editing of political news. This report discusses the problems that I encountered in English-to-Chinese political news trans-editing and measures that I adopted with the theoretical guidance of the Skopos Theory. Besides, I hope this report can be of some help to those whose work is English-to-Chinese news trans-editing.The report is divided into four chapters. The first chapter includes background introduction and task description. The second presents the theoretical basis of this report. The third introduces trans-editing process, in which trans-editing strategies are discussed through analyzing examples. The last chapter summarizes my benefit from the trans-editing project, and my reflection on it.
