A Study Of The Translation Of Long Sentences In English For Science And Technology

With the development of science and technology and the acceleration of global economic integration, the communication of science and technology between China and the west is more and more frequent, so the importance of English for Science and Technology is becoming more and more prominent.English for Science and Technology(EST) generally refers to English appeared in scientific works, papers, textbooks, scientific and technical reports and dissertations of natural science and engineering technology, which has become a special new field of modern English in many countries. As an important English style, English for Science and Technology has its specialties in lexis, rhetoric and syntax. Syntactically,English for Science and Technology(EST) has the characteristics of frequent use of passive voices, use of nominalization and wide use of long sentences, among which the use of long sentences is most obvious. Hence, a study of the long sentences in English for Science and Technology(EST) is the key difficulty in EST translation.The long sentences in EST are always complex in the structure with many coordinative constituents and long modifiers, so it is inevitable to meet difficulties in E-C translation. In order to overcome this difficulty, this thesis tends to study the syntactic features of the long sentences in EST first. After analyzing the syntactic features of EST, then the classification and syntactic features of the long sentences in EST as well as the sequential characteristics of EST long sentences, this thesis puts forward three main translation methods at last.The essence of the translation of the long sentences in EST is the transformation of the way of thinking, which can be called the rearrangement of the sentence orders.Due to the discrepancy between English and Chinese way of thinking, we should adjust the word orders appropriately according to the original meaning and the Chinese conventional habit.We can divide the long sentences into many short sentences, and reconfigure the text according to the original logic and meanings. Referring to the previous researches,this paper analyzes the translation of the long sentences in EST from the perspectiveof sequential translation, reverse translation and combined translation. These methods will help the translator have a better understanding of the original text, making the translation text accurate, smooth and logical. The author hopes the study of this paper will be helpful for further study on the translation of EST, especially for the translation of long sentences in EST, and improve the translation quality of the Sci-tech products.
