An Analysis On C-E Guide Interpreting From The Perspective Of Skopos

In April 2016,the author had the opportunity to go to Huanggang city with the NZ principals' delegation as the guide-interpreter.The Chinese guide commentaries were later transcribed as the source text to analyze the characteristics.And the interpretations were also transcribed as the target text for evaluation of the interpreting service.The interpreter found out that the culture-loaded words were the biggest challenge.315 culture-loaded words were found in the source text.The aim of this report is to find out how to interpret the culture-loaded words in an effective way.Based on the cultural background of the clients,culture-loaded words were classified into two categories: recipient-irrelevant culture-loaded words and recipient-relevant culture-loaded words.Specifically,recipient-irrelevant culture-loaded words refer to specific culture-loaded words,culture-loaded words with unique linguistic styles.And recipient-relevant culture-loaded words refer to culture-loaded words with characteristic connotative meanings,legends and anecdotes and four-character words and poems for scenic description.The interpreter concludes that the purpose of the interpreting task is to attain a concise and appealing target text which is decided by the stylistic features and functions of English tourism text and the expectations of visitors.The interpreter summarized certain patterns to solve the problems caused by culture-loaded words under the guidance of Skopos Theory.To attain a concise target text,recipient-irrelevant culture-loaded words could be omitted;and to attain an appealing target text,the recipient-irrelevant culture-loaded words could be further amplified.To be specific,sentences featured with specific culture-loaded words,culture-loaded words with unique linguistic styles could be omitted or paraphrased to make the target text concise.According to Chen's conclusion on the forms of appeal,the interpreter found three appropriate strategies to make the target text appealing:(1)elaborating culture-loaded words with characteristic connotative meanings;(2)intriguing the visitors with legends and anecdotes;(3)visualizing four-character words and poems for scenic description.The strategies to culture-loaded words could be a good reference for other interpreters when doing guide interpreting.
