Chen Yuan(1880-1971), a world-famous historian and a great educator who enjoys highreputation, devoted almost all his life to the cause of education, especially higher education.This thesis focuses on the study of Chen Yuan’s educational thought. Based on thedocuments and theoretical works acquired, the researcher analyzes and summarizes the mainideas of Chen Yuan’s thought of higher education against the historical background andcomment on the historic value and practical significance his thought by way of literaturereview and historical analysis. This thesis is divided into four parts.In the first part, with the relevant data and description of Chen Yuan’s life, the conceptand connotation of his thought of higher education is put forward. In the second part, bystudying some specific examples, the researcher explains the subjective and objective factorsthat lead to the formation of Chen Yuan’s educational thought. In the third part, with specificcase study, Chen’s main ideas of higher education are expounded in detail in the followingaspects such as the object, principles aims, and ways of higher education as well ascurriculum arrangement and education management system. In the last part, the researcherdiscusses the historic value and practical significance of Chen Yuan’s educational thought bycombination with the current situation of higher education in China. Chen Yuan is aneducator with solid theoretical foundation and abundant practical experience. Thus theresearch of his thought of higher education can bring some enlightenment to the cultivation oftalents with innovative spirits and present higher education reform.
