Chen Yuan is not only a generation of historiography masters and sinology scholars,but also a famous educator and higher education administrator in China,engaged in university management for forty-five years and has rich experience in university management,he can be described as the longest-serving university president in modern Chinese history.However,the current overall research on Chen Yuan is mainly focuses on his historian status,the research results are more involved in the field of historical disciplines,less about his higher education management thoughts,and the scholars now are more concerned about the achievements of Southwest Associated University of " South move and North Return",neglect the spirits of Fu Jen University in Peking,which adhered to Beiping alone in wartime.Therefore,taking 1926 to1952 as the time node,focusing on Chen Yuan's higher education management thoughts during his tenure as president of Fu Jen University in Peking from 1926 to 1952 could be favourable for further broadening the visions of the research concerning to Chen Yuan,deepening the understanding of educators in the Republic of China,strengthening the historical background and theoretical basis of the higher education management discipline,and better guiding the practice of higher education management.Based on Chen Yuan's correspondence collection,students' oral history,thesis collection and relevant documents of him at that time,this study adopts literature research method and historical research method,through literature analysis to present the core content,historical value and basic characteristics of Chen Yuan's higher education management thoughts.First of all,on the basis of a brief introduction to Chen Yuan's basic situation,this study starts from three stages of receiving education,teaching and serving as an education manager to analyze Chen Yuan's entire educational life and trace the origin of Chen Yuan's higher education management thoughts.Secondly,according to the main content of university management and the specific reality of Chen Yuan's management period,this study mainly explains the core of Chen Yuan's higher education management ideas from the perspectives of educational philosophy,teacher management,student management and campus management.On the whole,Chen Yuan's higher education management thoughts can be summed up into four aspects: First,put forward the idea of "China and the West,compatible and inclusive",research and teaching are equally important of running a school.Second,taking "true talents and learning" as the standard for teacher recruitment,relying on teachers to promote discipline construction and teaching reform,promoting increasing teachers' salaries,as well as respecting the old teachers and fostering of young teachers in the management of teachers.Third,advocating the co-education of male and female students,paying attention to practice and general education,and implementing the "Strictadmission and strict graduation" mechanism of student management.Fourth,building new dormitories,completing teaching equipment,creating special school journals,organizing cultural activities and other ways to strengthen the campus material and cultural construction.Finally,through the core content of Chen Yuan's higher education management thoughts,the basic characteristics and historical value of his thoughts are refined,and useful thinking about the present is put forward.Chen Yuan's higher education management thoughts not only always maintains "the core status of Chinese traditional academic" as its main line,takes "strict requirements" as his management principle,and pays attention to the organic coordination of various educational elements,pays attention to the unification of science and practice,but also has important historical value.For one thing,under the guidance of Chen Yuan's higher education management ideas,Beijing Fu Jen University has sent a large number of elite talents to modern China,improved the quality of education and teaching management in modern China,promoted the innovation of modern education management system in China.For another,Chen Yuan's higher education management thoughts has an important historical value,it has promoted the localization of Catholic higher education in modern China.Research on Chen Yuan's higher education management thoughts can provide useful thinking for college principals to strengthen school management and deepen the reform of higher education management.
