In China, higher education has started to alter from "elite education" to "public education". With a dramatically increasing number of graduates, the pressure of employment becomes more and more severe. There are many factors attributing to the difficulty of the employment for university graduates. Apart from the objective factors, such as social and economic development, the discipline construction of higher education, the employment environment, the professional structure, the personnel system and the employment structure etc, the deviation of the values on job seeking is an important subjective factor. Based on the surveys on the employment problems of780graduates in5universities in Guilin, this thesis concludes the current status and characteristics of university students’employment values and analyzes the influential factors, from which the problems of values education in university vocational guidance are put forward, and the suggestions on how to improve values education are discussed.The introduction of this thesis firstly interprets some related core contents, and indicates that values education of employment guidance includes the education of occupational values and the education of life outlooks. The author also gives an account of the literature review at home and abroad, and then introduces the methodology adopted in the thesis and its originality. The first chapter expounds the present historical background of the current values education in employment guidance, thus further analyzing how the popularization of the higher education, the market economy and the value-diversified historical context influence the formation of graduates’values and selections of their careers. The second chapter reveals the theoretical foundations of the current values education in employment guidance, from the perspectives of the Marxist theory, China’s core socialist values and the theories of overseas values education, occupational development, as well as employment guidance, indicating that strengthening the values education and guidance not only adapts to the needs of the changing times, but also is the inevitable product of the innovation of higher education theory and vocational guidance theory, and is the essence of the core socialist values education under the guidance of Marxism occupational values and the theory of historical resultant forces. The first part of chapter three analyzes the results of the questionnaires based on current college students’professional values, pointing out that the deepening of market economy and the clash of multiple values have great influence on college students’values. The current results show that college students have met with different degrees of psychology confusions and value problems in the course of looking for jobs. Then, according to the investigation, the author sums up the main features of graduates’values during the process of hunting for jobs and their impacts, which can be summarized in four aspects as follows:value orientation and evaluation tend to be utilitarian; the consciousness of vocational development has enhanced, but awareness of self-planning is still week; conceptions of looking for secure lifetime jobs are still popular; and the individual viewpoint tendency is evident. Therefore, it can be seen that values have huge influence on college students’ employment and it is of great necessity to purposefully strengthen the values education in the course of job-hunting guidance. The second part of chapter three, from educational objectives, content, carrier as well as educational mechanism, analyzes some of the shortcomings and problems existing in value education of college occupational guidance. The major problems cover as follows. Firstly, the poor understanding and little attention on education of value orientations contribute to the ambiguities of educational objectives and the fuzziness of self-positioning. This thesis also points out that nowadays many universities and colleges confuse vocational values with life outlooks. And idealization, fuzzification, and vagueness towards self-positioning result in "high input and low output" in the education of value orientations and occupational guidance. Secondly, educational content, which is not close to reality, lacks pertinence and persuasion, attaching less importance to human characteristics. Thirdly, the traditional model of theory instillation still takes the main position in class, which makes the form of education monotonous and the implementation ways too simple. Meanwhile, positive effect from peers fails to come into full play, and more mechanisms of effective communication are still badly needed. Last but not least, the educational system of occupational values is not so scientific, the system of estimation mechanisms needs to be improved and the faculty for occupational guidance courses still needs to be strengthened. In the last of the body part, the author discusses the suggestive countermeasures to solve the existing problems in the education of value orientations in occupational guidance given by universities and colleges. The thesis notes that in order to promote rapid, sound and efficient practice and development of values education in graduates’career guidance, in the first place, the design and arrangement of objectives and contents should be systematic, practical and effective and should adhere to the basic principles of people-orientation, seeking truth and keeping pace with the times. Meanwhile, they should be accordant with the requirements of changing times and the students’ individual development, which is important for our country and society to cultivate excellent workers full of passions in their jobs and good citizens obeying the laws. In the second place, as to the dynamic mechanism, not only the education of career values should be enhanced, but also the education and guidance of life values are in need of reinforcement, both of which are complementary to each other and combine into resultant forces. Thirdly, joint forces of guidance of Marxist principles, core value system of socialism and socialist core values, joint forces of motive powers of career planning education in universities, career values education, job-hunting mental health courses and life values education, as well as the joint boosting forces of family and social education should be developed. These three joint forces can on the one hand improve the overall quality and level of higher education on the other hand advance students’ professional skills and moral quality, thus promoting the employment rate and the quality of employment.
