With the booming science and technology and the updating knowledge, mathematical application has been in daily life. In Senior high schools, mathematicalword problems have taken up an important position in mathematics learning andteaching. Word problems concerning extensively hot question situations close to life, asignificant item type composing mathematics test papers for National College EntranceExamination, can better test students’ mathematical application ability andproblem-solving ability and enhance their mathematical thinking ability andmathematical literacy. However, the scoring rate of this part is less than15%, the reasonof which lies in the following: Firstly, students, terrified and not calm to read, cannotfind out the key points, faced with such long statements and irrelevant information;Secondly, some teachers, lacking objective analysis to overestimate the difficulty ofword problems, do not often guide their students how to read word problems, to find outthe key or to establish mathematical models.Based on the cause analysis of students’ difficulty in learning and solving wordproblems, the researcher proposes an effective mathematics reading method to enhancetheir mathematical application ability. After reviewing literature, the researcherconducted a questionnaire to students in ten classes of2013in Jiajiang Branch MiddleSchool, to grasp their current situation in mathematical reading and word problemsolving. Meanwhile, the researcher, with Class10experimental class and Class9control class, conducted a24-month experimental study. In conclusion, the researcherproposes the following mathematics reading strategies to enhance students’ applicationability:1. Strategy to foster students’ interest in mathematics reading.2. Strategy to establish students’ good habit in reading before solving wordproblems.3. Strategy to conduct mathematics reading by stages.
