Reading serves for delight, for ornament, and for ability, is an important way forpeople to acquire knowledge and information. The soft power of a country is greatlyaffected by its citizens’ reading ability and reading level. Pupils are in crucial stage forcognitive development, knowledge accumulation and personality formation. Study onthe current situation of extracurricular reading in elementary school, gaining insight intostudents’ reading interest and reading demand, finding problems, exploring the reasonsand taking feasible measures, is beneficial to achieve the comprehensive developmentof students.The research focuses on the situation investigation and problems research ofstudents’ extracurricular in primary school, taking F school in Wuhan as an example.The study finds the low utilization of public books, non-guaranteed reading time,indisposed reading habits, deficient guidance and accompany.Pupils’ reading activities is influenced by multiple factors such as social morality,school environment and family Cultural Capital, multi-pronged measures are needed forproblem solving. For the government, the nationwide reading movement and activities,public library construction and market supervision are awaited. For schools, setting upthe reading curriculum, and enhancing teacher training. Parents and teachers need thetransformation in reading awareness, more guidance and accompany are being expected.
