In recent years, with further implementation of innovation-driven development strategy, colleges and universities are playing an increasingly important role in national innovation system, relying on the advantages of talents, subjects, resources and environment. They have become the main forces of national basic and applied research, as well as vital new power of high technology industrialization, which provided strong support for China’s scientific and technological progress and economic and social development.As key embodiment of universities’ science and technology innovation ability and level, more and more attentions are paid on patent work from the government, universities and the public. For the last few years, with the direct promotion of the innovation-driven development strategy and the National Intellectual Property Strategy, patent work in colleges and universities has received significant achievements, particularly in creation, utilization, protection and management. This makes colleges and universities become an important part in the development of national intellectual property undertaking.However, due to the affection from social environment, identity of universities, management system, and value orientation of faculty etc., there are many problems to be solved in patent work of colleges and universities. IPR protection awareness in colleges and universities needed to be further raised. Many factors, for instance, low utilization efficiency, unsound management system and poor patent quality, directly restrict the enhancement of technology innovation capability and the transformation of achievements in scientific research. Furthermore, they will affect the implementation of national innovation-driven development strategy and economic quality and efficiency upgrades.Through data statistics and issue analysis, the article aims to demonstrate the latest situations, major problems and corresponding reasons of patent work in colleges and universities. The article then puts forward a series suggestion, such as optimizing the policy and legal system, constructing good exterior environment, constituting state IP management standard of colleges and universities, strengthening coordination on Industry-Academy-Research, reinforcing IP protection, deepening profit distribution reform of scientific and technological achievements, consummating IP management of scientific research project, promoting IP consciousness of professors and students. Colleges and universities can play important actions on patent talent training, patent researching and IP cultural promulgating. The promotion of the patent work level in colleges and universities will effectively support the implementation of national innovation-driven development strategy and the construction of great-IP-power nation.
