Ancient Chinese poetry has a long history of its own development and enjoys a unique and important position in China’s time-honored culture. Reading and appreciation of ancient Chinese poetry allows students to truly experience China’s rich culture. Under the guidance of the new curriculum reform, it has been advocated at length to improve the Chinese language attainments of students in elementary education filed. Chinese itself is a huge system involving numerous aspects in terms of language attainments. Therefore, the appropriate approach can lead to the authentic upgrade of students’ literature attainments. How to implement the requirements of core attainments in teaching and learning level is a very important issue of education field in current age. The core attainments of reading and appreciation can play the guiding role for students to experience the rich cultural values of ancient Chinese poetry. Through the analysis on reading comprehension requirements, students’ exam performances and lack of abilities from representative samples of college entrance examination in the last three years, it can be found that it remains a difficult task to strengthen the core attainments of ancient Chinese poetry reading and appreciation, which constructs the practical value of this paper. And in terms of the status quo of the research in this field, there remains some work to be discussed and furthered in the following contents, which constructs the theoretical value of this paper.This thesis can be divided into five parts:Introduction: this part makes a brief elaboration and explanation of the significance and status quo of research as well as this paper’s research approach and methodology.Part I: ancient Chinese poetry reading, the connotation of reading attainments and other relevant concepts are defined and sorted firstly in this part. Then from the angle of reading requirements of Chinese curriculum in college entrance examination, the generalities and individualities in reading are reached and by further summarization of generalities, the elements of core attainments of ancient Chinese poetry reading are discussed.Part II: the lack of abilities in terms of core attainments of middle school students’ ancient Chinese poetry reading and appreciation is analyzed by the means of questionnaires and tests. Then the reasons for the lack are discussed from both aspects of teachers and students.Part III: on the basis of analysis in parts above, this part discusses the improved methods as to developing the core attainments of high school students’ reading and appreciation of ancient Chinese poetry.Part IV: the main viewpoints and conclusion of this paper are summarized and made in this part.
