Both China and Japan belong to the cultural cycle of Chinese characters in East Asia. Japan, in the past, adopted Chinese characters to record their national language and culture. Until now, more than 2,000 Chinese characters are still used in their daily life. Apart from Chinese characters, it is claimed that Chinese poetry and essays have a profound influence on Japanese literatures. And Japanese government listed the learning of Chinese characters, Han poetry and Han essays in its all-age syllabuses from primary school to senior high school. To be detailed, pupils are required to master the use of 1,006 characters. Chinese poems and classics, such as The Analects of Confucius and poems in the Tang Dynasty, will be taught at the fifth grade of primary school. Students will learn more Chinese classics during the classes in their junior and senior high schools. This dissertation is consistent of two major sections. One is the investigation, summarization and analysis of the teaching of Chinese characters in Japan’s schools, and another is the teaching of Chinese poetry and essays in Japan’s schools. In order to explore these issues, the author, taking students whom are less than 18 years old as research subjects, summarized and analyzed all the Chinese characters, poems and essays via the examination of the teaching of Chinese characters, poetry, and essays in Japan’s schools. And then, he discussed how to effectively integrate Chinese characters, poems and essays into the teaching of Japanese learners. A mode of teaching is provided, and followed by the design of two classroom-teaching plans, such as Chinese characters and poetry in the Tang Dynasty respectively.
