The Sports Diplomacy Path In The Rerspective Of Soft Power

The contemporary world is now paying increasingly attention on soft power and public diplomacy. Sports, with its significant cultural values and communication capabilities, has been playing a unique role in China’s diplomatic history. In1970s, the famous "Ping Pong Diplomacy" opened the door of China-US relations. Until the2008Beijing Olympic Games, to the current bid for the2022Winter Olympic Games, China has been committed to exchange through sports to make itself better understood by the whole world, which have achieved tremendous results. Thus, sports diplomacy has become an important part of public diplomacy, it can transcend borders and cultural differences to construct a good image of our nation.Compared with the athletic sports in Western countries, China’s traditional sports bear unique Chinese culture, its "harmony""collaboration,""morality","Health maintenance" and other values are treasure for traditional Chinese culture, which are extremely great resources of soft power for China. So, if we can make good use of traditional sports project with their soft power resources, it must can bound to open up China’s sports diplomacy in a new and more effective way.Through literature study we found that in recent years, there are a few studies on sports diplomacy, but rarely about how to take advantage of our traditional sports as approaches to carry out sports diplomacy. It should be said the system and the construction of China’s sports diplomacy mechanism is still very inadequate, while for the research studies related to sports diplomacy with traditional sports as the path are even more scarce. In this paper, through literature, the author use historical analysis, comparative analysis and other research methods, learn from the US, Japan, Korea, India’s experience on the use of traditional sports in public diplomacy, thus conduct a systematic study of the current situation of our traditional sports and give his own suggestions for the path of sports diplomacy.From the angle of soft power, the author has innovated a new way that making the traditional sports as a new path of sports diplomacy, but due to the inadequate studies overseas, I encountered many difficulties in searching useful information. In general, the purpose of this paper are:(1) by reviewing the history of sports diplomacy, pointing out the lack of traditional sports in our public diplomacy;(2) through the proposed project, using the traditional Chinese sports as a diplomatic path to enhance the soft power of China;(3) summarized the status of international exchange of traditional sports projects in China;(4) referring to the successful experience of the United States, Japan, South Korea, India and put forward our own proposals.
