Counselors have contributed a lot to the cultural and ideological progress in independent colleges by working on students’ ideological and political education, daily life management, psychological and employment guidance, which further promotes the talent cultivation and social stability. However, due to the rapidly changing domestic and global job market, social requirements for undergraduates are changing as well. This is becoming a new challenge for ideological and political education. Since most independent colleges have only been built for less than 20 years, they still lack practical experience of development and also face the noticeable problem of counselor teams, resulting in unsatisfactory quality of student cultivation. Therefore, it’s urgent to study the current living and development status of counselors in independent colleges.Based on the existing situation of independent colleges, this study explores how to improve quality of counselors effectively and efficiently. Taking Zhejiang University City College as an example, this study adopts multi research methods, such as literature review, survey and in-depth interview, to analyze factors that affect quality of counselors and related administration system. The results show that three main problems exist in the development of counselors in independent colleges. The three problems are(1) low degree of social recognition;(2) imperfect management system; and(3) poor comprehensive quality. To solve these problems, this study puts forward several feasible suggestions. First of all, improve the social status and value of counselors in independent colleges. Independent colleges can further promote their own development and social influence, so as to improve the social reputation of counselors. Secondly, establish a relatively perfect management system in independent colleges. Independent colleges can emphasize the importance of counselors, rigorously select the candidates, clearly determine their working roles and regulations, and improve the performance management and career development. Finally, improve the comprehensive and professional skills of counselors at the same time. Independent colleges can provide counselors with many professional training opportunities and urge them to learn in their spare time as well.
