In recent years, with the continuous development of the society, economy, science and technology, culture, and so on, basic education’s informatization level has been increasingly improved, and the information technology education in secondary school is also developing vigorously. At the same time, however, the trend of secondary school IT teachers’ beingmarginalized hasn’t got reversed but seems even worse instead. “Information Technology” is defined as a minor subject and regarded unimportant, as the arranged classes are usually replaced or occupiedby other so-called major subjects. These difficulties are eroding the IT teachers’ lives and impeding the smooth development of secondary school information technology education. Therefore, the research on secondary school IT teachers’ existing status and the confusions they are facing with has significant theoretical values and practical meanings to stable their team, improve their teaching efficiency and promote their and their students’ comprehensive and harmonious development.Based on research documents of theories and practices on Chinese and foreign secondary school information technology education and teachers’ career development, the author conducted this research about the current information and technology education in secondary schools which are under Suzhou Education Bureau’s direct jurisdiction. The research mainly focuses on IT teachers’ present working conditions and the schools’ managing systems, etc. Combining his own working experience and understanding with thetalking and interviews with 11 IT teachers from different schools, the author drew up a ‘Secondary school IT Teachers’ Career Development Situation Questionnaire’. Findings are: Secondary school IT teachers are being marginalized; schools do not pay enough attention to this subject’s special characteristics and lack a scientific recognition, as a result, the significance of the IT subject was not fully demonstrated; Meanwhile, schools haven’t concerned much about the IT teachers, thus, the teachers have little confidence in their own subject, lose targets regarding the subject’s developing direction, have low motivation for self-development, and these conversely hamper their career development. In this research, the author believed that the problems and confusions that secondary school IT teachers are facing and experiencing have both objective and subjective roots. 1) Objectively, the educational bureaus’ policy guidanceleads to schools’ unclear course definition and the society’s low identification; IT teachers’ values are not reasonably assessed, and to some extent, they lack fair and impartial competition and treatment.2) Subjectively, some IT teachers’ teaching skills are poor as they do not have professional trainings, they have no positive idea of development due to the subject’s present situation, and their self-awareness and initiative are also quite low.Based on the above-mentioned points and from the perspective of teachers’ career development, this paper covers the educational bureaus, schools as well as the teachers themselves, and tries to bring forward some comments and suggestions for secondary school IT teachers on how to create a meaningful career and improve their marginalized status,...
