According to the Chinese Curriculum Standards, the expression of written language in first studying period is identified as writing the words. The introduction of this definition is supposed to reduce the difficulties that pupils have at the beginning of writing. It also aims at developing their interest in and confidence of writing. Writing the words means that pupils write down smoothly whatever they want to say. The teaching of writing the words is a process during which Chinese teachers of primary grades decide their teaching strategies and teaching process designs, and guide students to work on writing the words, considering the demands of teaching goals in the Chinese Curriculum Standards and the current situation where how the students of lower grades write words. At present, the teaching of writing the words in primary school is faced with some problems, such as the confusion about the idea of writing the words, the unclarity of teaching goals, the narrowness of the content, outdated form, the singularity of assessment format and so on. Therefore, the following strategies have to be adopted for improvement. Firstly, teachers should build the idea of macro curriculum and evolution; secondly, the teaching goals should be set scientifically according to the Chinese Curriculum Standards; thirdly, the contents of teaching writing the words should be broadened in combination of the features in students’ mind and body development; then, both the way and form should be richened in the teaching; lastly, not only the function of encouragement but also the system building in assessment needs more attention and perfection.
