A Study Of Essence,confusion And Route Choice Of University Presidents’ Professionalization

A president is the soul of university, who closely related to the rise and fall of a university development. Review the construction of world-class university, its achievements usually depend on the efforts of the president. There is no doubt that the president is very important. In the long history of university development, because of the change of outside environment and the developing needs of university itself, the role of president is changing constantly and increasingly presenting a trend of professionalization.Nowadays, with the maturity of the market economic system and the development of modern university, professional university president has become a common choice for managers in many world-class universities. Our country is at the critical stage of the modernization of university governance system and governance capacity. It is very necessary to promote the standandization of president’s professional system and reform president management system. Professionalization of university presidents is a key measure for reform. Studying professionalization of university presidents is not only helpful to enrich the leadership theory and establish the system of scientific management, but also helpful to promote presidents’ professionalization and realize the modernization of university governance capacity.At present, studies on professionalization of university presidents are mainly focusing on the concept of professionalization and the internal management system in university from the microscopic view. Follwing “history-essence-confusion” new thinking, this paper is combed the role evolution of western president and tranced the origin and essence from history so as to deeply grasp the connotation and significance of professionalization. Based on the understanding of essence, thinking of developing confusion and breaking through the limit of “consider problems standing with itselves”, this paper does tries to do research from the macro and micro aspects, descusses four developing confusion from the market economy maturity, higher education system, career management system of the university president as well as the personal development of the university president. According to the confusion and combining with the human capital theory and open system from the perspective of organization theory, a suggesting of promoting the professionalization of university presidents is put forward from multi-level and multi-angles, which is good to make history, essence, confusion and route choice interlocking and promote further study. The study will enrich the theoretical system of presidents’ professionalization and will have a certain theoretical value and practical significance.
