Problem-Based Learning(PBL for short) is a typical student-oriented teaching method, which has drawn great attention of educators and become a popular subject for research in recent years.This study discusses the application of PBL to advanced mathematics in higher vocational colleges. First, the paper reviews the overseas and domestic research status, discusses the main problems existing in the research and defines some core concepts, such as PBL teaching method and so on. Second, the paper explores the theoretical foundations of PBL from different aspects—Dewey’s pragmatism theory, cognitive constructivism theory, situational learning theory and cooperative learning theory. Third, the study proposes the requirements for teacher-student role coordination. The talent-cultivating objectives of higher vocational colleges, the demands of mathematics teaching reformation and students’ learning characteristics indicate that it’s necessary for higher vocational colleges to implement PBL in higher mathematics teaching. In the paper, the writer also analyzes the difficulty in higher mathematics teaching of higher vocational colleges through the questionnaire survey method and interview method. At the same time she finds that both teachers and students in higher vocational colleges have the desire of trying PBL teaching reform. Fourth, combined with the mathematics teaching cases in higher vocational colleges, the core content of the paper mainly focuses on these key issues: how to design issues, how to implement teaching and how to evaluate the results. Fifth, the paper sums up the effects and the existing problems of PBL in mathematics teaching of higher vocational colleges by doing teaching experiments. Finally, according to the mentioned research, some feasible proposals have been put forward to promote the implementation of PBL in higher mathematics teaching of higher vocational colleges.
