With the development of the economy, English as a common international language playing a more important role, many countries in the world are setting up English classes, and China is no exception. Language acquisition depends on a mass of reading. It is found that a large amount of reading is beneficial to the improvement of second language proficiency.With the new curriculum reform, reading in English teaching is becoming increasingly important. But for a long time, because of the pressure of exam-oriented education, teachers and students believe that English reading is doing reading comprehension. Due to the wrong conception of reading, the situation of high school students’ English reading is not optimistic.The paper first raises the question and presents some related theories based on reading. Then it shows an investigation of present situation of English reading of the students and teachers in two Suzhou high schools. Interviews are held and questionnaires are issued. After doing the research on the problems and the trends of the high school students’ English reading, the paper summarizes several strategies to deal with according to the new curriculum reform. |
