Chronological thinking ability is an important basis for the discipline of history. Currently, various researches were completed by historians on training middle school students’ chronological thinking ability, which didn’t give us a clear conceptual analysis and definition about chronological thinking ability.In this paper, we will analysis several existing theories to propose an explicit definition and necessities about chronological thinking ability. At the same time, we will focus on the problem, how to build students’ capability about chronological thinking.This paper consists of three parts. In the first part, we will put our teaching experiences and existing theories together to give a brief introduction for current researches’ progress, as well as illustrate the main ideas and methods. At the end of this part, we will give evaluations of our methods about its innovation and deficiency. The second part is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is try defining the chronological thinking’s concept on the base of thinking,thinking ability and the main viewpoint of chronological thinking. In my opinion, the history chronological thinking which is on the basis of the general thinking and history information is a ability to comprehend history. This ability have too layers. At a fundamental level,it’s a grasp of chronological thinking’s common sense,at a higher level,it need us understand history from time characteristics of longitudinal and transverse; the second chapter is to explore the necessity of cultivating the ability of chronological thinking from the historical discipline, curriculum standards and so on;The third chapter mainly put forward the requirements of students’ ability in chronological thinking from the perspective of teachers and students’ view. The last part, we will make a conclusion.
