With the further reform in basic education, extracurricular reading has attracted extensive attention from all circles, especially from school. Chinese Course Standard of Full-time Compulsory Education which is about reading teaching suggestion puts forward, “do less exercises, read more books, have a good read, read good books and read the whole book.” But in reality, the situation of the extracurricular reading is not optimistic and the quality of reading is obviously not high. Teachers are the main force of education in our country. Therefore, the students’ extracurricular reading level and the teachers’ instruction are inseparable.Aiming at solving the exiting problems of the rural pupils’ extracurricular reading, this study, combined with teaching goals of the curriculum in Chinese reading and rural areas as the research perspective, suggests the instruction strategies of teachers by using the methods of literature, questionnaire and interview and taking Jinzhou city as an example. First of all, this thesis introduces the topic basis and relevant research both home and abroad, and briefly illustrates the research purpose and research methods, as well as the definitions of extracurricular reading and its related concepts. Secondly, the current situation of extracurricular reading of the rural pupils in Jinzhou city and the teachers’ instruction for their extracurricular reading are investigated and analyzed. On this basis, the main problems of rural primary school students’ extracurricular reading are summarized as follows: extracurricular reading habits have not yet formed, narrow extracurricular reading, improper extracurricular reading method and lack of extracurricular reading environment. Many of these problems which can be influenced by the teachers’ factors are discussed. Finally, on the basis of the extracurricular reading problems existing in rural primary school students, this thesis puts forward three aspects of the teachers’ instruction suggestions: the improvement of teachers themselves is the foundation; the teachers’ instruction on students’ extracurricular reading is the key; the teachers’ creating a good environment for extracurricular reading is the requisite.From the teachers’ perspective, this study mainly focus on the strategies for solving problems of rural pupils’ extracurricular reading, and combining the theoretical research and practical experience in hope that it will be beneficial to improve the rural pupils’ extracurricular reading quality.
