Contemporary prose not only has a decisive influence in the history of contemporary Chinese literature, but also is an integral part in Chinese language teaching. People agree that with beautiful diction, rich emotion and profound philosophy, the outstanding contemporary prose can edify sentiment and enlighten students. Thus, they deserve to play a critical role in Chinese teaching. Currently, however, students are not interesting enough, textbook arrangement is yet to standardize, and the teachers lack a rational and complete set of teaching strategy. Only taught by experience, knowledge on style of the students cannot endure the College Entrance Examination. This paper will research the strategy to teach contemporary prose in high school based on the stylistic features of the prose, the current teaching situation, and teaching experience.The first part of this thesis is literature review, summarizing the prose style knowledge, tracing the evolution of the concept of prose, exploring the essence of prose style, and improving the classification of prose. According to the characteristics, the prose is divided into story narration, scenery description and argumentation. In the second part, based on the three types of prose, the thesis analyzes the arrangement of the modern and contemporary prose in the teaching materials. The third part discusses the current situation and its causes based on the College Entrance Examination and reality. The fourth part explores the principles for teaching contemporary prose, namely focusing prose speech form and respecting students’initiative understanding. The fifth part put forward that the vision on prose teaching is to perceive the text, to explore the text, and to expand the text. This thesis is to provide an objective, comprehensive and rational understanding of prose style knowledge on the basis of teaching situation and teaching principles.
