Electric power industry is a significant infrastructure which is closely associated with the growth of Chinese economy and the improvement of peoples’ living standard. With the more deterioration of environment and the depletion of traditional energy resource, as well as the generation of wind, solar, geothermal, ocean tides, nuclear power and other new power generation technologies, it comes to the new era of competition and innovation in the electricity industry. It is the only way to optimize and change the approach of development in electricity industry for deepening the reform and meeting the dual needs of environmental protection in rapid economic development and socialized production. With the advancement of modern traffic and information network technology, the transformation, upgrading and sustainable development of Chinese power industry depends on the increase of research and innovation capability and the breakthrough of Chinese core technology. In the "big science" era, with the technology life cycles continuing to be shorten, innovation difficulty is progressively increasing, cooperation between organizations becomes an important way to share new ideas, new skills and exchange resources, and collaborative innovation is becoming a key access to the development resources and advanced innovation ability. As the main technological innovation member, enterprises can successfully solve the technical problems, develop key technologies with independent intellectual property, break the foreign technology monopoly by collaborative innovation. Collaborative innovation is becoming an important way to improve the competitiveness of Chinese electric power industry.Based on Chinese State Intellectual property Office(SIPO) patent data, this paper searches electric power industry authorized cooperation utility patents issued between 2001 and 2012, combined with social network analysis, we deeply analyse the electric power industry patent cooperation network evolution at different times. According to the descriptive development analysis of cooperation patent in power industry, we make an empirical analysis about the power industry cooperation network changes and the competitive position changes of the subject innovation capacity from two dimensions of different periods and different types. Studies have shown that, Chinese power industry cooperation patents mainly distribute in large State-owned enterprises, occupy some proportion in the university industry collaboration patents, spread a little in private enterprises; through the technology field development analysis, we found cooperation patent technology mainly concentrate on power supply system, wire cable installation, conductor material, emergency protection circuit device, and lighting device field, and the patent technology field advantages distribution of patent holders are different. From the perspective of competitiveness enterprise, State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company, State Grid Corporation of China and Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd have significant competitive advantages in the cooperation of power industry. Overall, the patent cooperation networks in electric power industry gradually shifted to be more diversified, the structure tends to be more complicated, the cooperation intensity is also gathering stronger.
