Hsue-Shen Tsien is one of the important founders of China’s major project ‘Two Bombs, One Satellite’, known ‘father of Chinese missiles’. He has not only fostered a large pool of engineering and technical personnel and management personnel, but also established space systems engineering management thoughts in keeping with China’s national conditions.Master-apprentice education played an important role in Tsien’s growing path, and it also has been a significant pattern of personnel cultivation that he used in big science and engineering. This thesis divides Tsien’s military engineering master-apprentice into the education part and the engineering practice part, and studies the process that Tsien’s role transited from a student to a military engineering counsellor, and from a military engineering manager to a designer. On the background of training the engineering personnel that were urgently needed and based on the first-hand archives stored in Tsinghua University and in University of Science and Technology of China, this thesis analyses Tsien’s educational principles and scholarship policies in establishing an engineering mechanics seminar in Tsinghua University and building Department of Modern Mechanics in University of Science and Technology of China, and illustrates his endeavors to set up and improve China’s education system of engineering mechanics. Starting from the two large scare scientific construction projects which are the missilery and the satellite project, focused on the successional chain of talented persons composing of Hsue-Shen Tsien, Chia-Tung Shun and Yong-Zhi Wang, this thesis explores the details of training technical backbones and management personnel in Tsien’s attempt of cultivating his space systems engineering management thoughts, further discusses how current China’s space systems integrate and develop his thoughts, and reveals the important influence of his engineering master-apprentice on missilery and man-made satellites and the experience and inspiration for contemporary engineering personnel cultivation in China.
