This is a translation project report of State of the World 2015: Confronting Hidden Threats to Sustainability by the Worldwatch Institute, of which Chapter 1 “The Seeds of Modern Threats” is the source text. The author of Chapter 1 is Michael Renner, a senior researcher at the Worldwatch Institute. The source text makes an in-depth analysis of human's awareness of destabilized climate and sheds light on the likely repercussions and major challenges we are facing now. The main contents of this report are divided into four parts. Part one is a brief introduction to the whole translation report, focusing on the background information, academic value and significance of the project. Part two is about the source text, including its main content as well as the stylistic analysis. Part Three touches upon the difficulties and problems the author has met in the course of translating as well as the theoretical basis and the corresponding solutions. Translation of complex long sentences has been what the author concerns most. The theoretical basis used to solve this main translation difficulty is the functional equivalence theory by Eugene A. Nida and the translation method is word-order adjustment. Part Four concludes with lessons learned from the translation project and some problems to be solved.
