Based on the text of fifteen thousand words on purchasing contract, this translation report is a summary of the previous translation task. International purchasing study helps author realize that purchasing contract plays a significant part in international trade. This English contract is the legal document involved in business matters between corporations and shares textual features of both financial and legal texts. All features are embodied in lexical and syntactic translation in particular.Ground on English-Chinese translation of standard purchasing agreement, this paper discusses some translation methods and techniques. First, some words with multi-interpretation and easily confusing words are often involved in the contract, thus the author need make the correct choice and distinguish the difference with the help of business references. Second, translating some specific modal verbs is needed to search deeper to make the alternative of prohibitive obligations or the compulsory obligations. Third, as for archaic English words, translators will not produce good versions of translations unless they are familiar with business terminology. Finally, a variety of translation techniques, such as sequential translation and split translation, are required to polish long sentences while set clauses are analyzed based on functional equivalence theory, where target language shows the original meaning of source language by virtue of understanding the professional terminology and expression in law text.This report reviews the whole translating and proofreading processes meanwhile the experience and inspiration of the author are concluded to provide other translators with some information for reference.
