This is a translation report based on an extract from Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. This Act was passed as federal legislation on March 23 rd,2010 by President Barack Obama, whose purpose is to improve the quality and lower the costs of social insurance through the reform of the Medicaid system, and by expanding public and private insurance coverage, to reduce the rate of non-coverage. One of the reasons that the writer chose this text was her interest in benefits and social insurance system of developed countries. Second, China is at a stage of high speed development, so solving the problem of people's benefits and insurance is an important task at hand. Therefore, the writer hopes that she could have a bit of contribution in providing reference material in this aspect. However, during the process of reading and translating the material, the author found that the most prominent characteristics of laws and regulations is the complexity of long sentences which makes them difficult to understand. Based on her translation practice, the writer tried to analyze the characteristics of long sentences and reasons of formation of long sentences so as to classify them into two categories, namely simple sentence and compound sentence. Therefore, the writer can apply the translation skills for translating long sentences of this act based on such categories.Firstly, the report described the background and the purpose of this project. Secondly, it discussed long sentence, which includes its characteristics and reasons of its formation, and provides a basic category of long sentence. Then it comes to the main body of this report, in which the author avails examples within the extract to demonstrate the translation skills she employed in the translation process. Lastly, the author concluded the translation project, in which the writer summarized her experience and unsolved questions, and hoped to make progress in the future translation practice on the basis of former experience and lessons.
