Contemporary Marxist Theory is an academic book selected and edited by 5 distinguished scholars who are Andrew Pendakis, Jeff Diamanti, Josh Robinson, Nicholas Brown and Imre Szeman. This book, with 34 articles from 41 scholars, illustrates the development of Marxist theory from historical conjuncture, shaping of the social, philosophical concepts, theories of culture, and the status of the political today in recent decade years. The original text is an excerpt from Chapter thirty and Chapter thirty- one of Contemporary Marxist Theory. The author undertook this translation task from her supervisor and was given numerous useful advices. As a professional and leading edge academic work in humanities, this book takes a greater demand on translator. The key points in the translation process lie in terms, long and difficult sentences, passive sentences and text cohesion. As for the translation of terms, contents should be taken into account due to the existence of polysemy and abstract words. When translating the long sentences, the translator should analyze their syntactic structure. For instance, sequential translation skill is adopted if the logic of target language is the same as that of source language; otherwise revision is taken. With regard to some long sentences in which the inner relationship among sense groups is not tight, splitting can be adopted. Moreover, more flexible translation skills could be used in dealing with complex sentences. For passive sentence, two ways can be adopted, conversion into active voice or unchanged passive sentence. Text cohesion can be achieved through the semantic and lexical approaches. The report reviewed and summarized the whole translating process. The author hopes to share her own experiences and lessons for other translators who interested in the translating of academic politics text.
