A Practice Report On Chinese Translation Of Long Sentence In The Art Of Positive Leadership

The huge difference between the two languages of English and Chinese at syntactic level is not only reflected in the word order,but also is manifested in English sentences being hypotaxis with information focus at the front of the sentence,while Chinese ones being parataxis with focus at the end.What's more,manymodifiers,coordinate elements and multi-level structures of language are included in English sentences,which makes it more difficult for people to translate English long sentences when taking the above differences into account.This practice report,based on the typical sentences from the author's translation of The Art of Positive Leadership,describes the problems the author encountered in the course of translation and aims at exploring the translation strategies of English long sentences.In general,this paper defines simple sentence,complex sentence,and compound complex sentence as the problems in the process of translation.Specifically,simple sentences are long but without punctuation or little punctuation;long complex sentences possess many long parentheses,“multi-branch structures”and logical relations;long compound complex sentences have lots of implied meaning and function words.Faced with the above-described complicated problems,the author refers to the existingEnglishlong sentences translation principles and strategies and finds out concrete solutions to solve the three above-mentioned problems.With regard tolong simple sentences,the author uses the translation method of dividing,linear translation,and hysteron-proteron.With regard to long complex sentences,the author uses the translation method of splitting,repetition,inserting and synthesis.With regard to long compound complex sentences,the author employs the translation method of embedding,amplification and omission.This paper chooses different translation strategies based on different types of English long sentences,which is different from the existing general translation strategies of English long sentences,providing a reference for other translators and also laying a solid foundation for the author's future translation practice onEnglish long sentences.
