This introspective report is based on the English-Chinese translation of a 10000-word excerpt from product specifications, commissioned by the Chemical Analysis Division of the Thermo Fisher Scientific Company. During the present author's internship at the company, she translated documents regarding the CB-Omni online elemental analyzer and the SamStat-20/30C slurry sampling system. Starting from an analysis of distinctive features of the source text and the perspective of a functionalist approach to translation, this report will discuss the problems and difficulties encountered during the translation process and the solutions that may help produce an adequate and readable target text. This report consists of six sections. The first section discusses the huge demand for the translation of technical product specifications and quality concerns. This report then describes the aforementioned translation project. The third section goes on to describe the preparations made at the pre-translation stage, including making a working plan, source-text analysis, compiling a bilingual glossary, and selecting a theoretical frame. The fourth section focuses on translation quality control measures such as using tools and keeping an Integrated Translator's Diary. The fifth section is devoted to translation example analysis, which deals with some typical translation problems and their solutions from a functionalist perspective. The concluding section summarizes the present author's thoughts on the translation project.
