This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of a 10000-word excerpt from Chinese Model Bidding Documents:Procurement of Works (International Competitive Bidding), commissioned by JETI (Jiangsu Engineering Translation Institute Co., Ltd.). The aim of this report is to analyze the textual features of the source document and discuss the principles followed and methods adopted in the translation process. This report consists of five sections. It will first provide a brief introduction to the background of the translation project and client who commissioned this project. It will then go on to conduct a literature review of current studies on the translation of bidding documents, including their reslarch results and limitations and discuss the guiding principle to be followed in the translation process-the purpose (skopos) of the translational action determines the translator's choices. The third part analyzes the word-level and syntactic features of the source document. Word-level features include the employment of abbreviations, jargons, archaic words, and legal words; syntactic features include the high frequency of declarative sentences, the use of long and complexity sentences and passive voice and active voice, and the employment of nominalization and modal auxiliaries. The fourth part discusses the translation methods adopted (e.g. addition, literal translation, division, conversion and inversion) in accordance with the guiding principles highlighted in the second part. Finally, this report concludes with a summary of what has been learnt during completion of the translation project as well as the limitations of the report.
