Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Xi'an Famous Foods Employee Handbook

The translation report is based on an English-Chinese translation of Xi'an Famous Foods Employee Handbook. The author accepted the translation task in June,2014. Employee Handbook, which is drafted by Xi'an Famous Foods, Inc., is taken as the text of translation report. There are nearly 13000 words and the text covers manager's note, regulations of employment, obligations and rights of employees and administrative rules. In the thesis, the author analyzes translation methods adopted in the translation under the guidance of functional equivalence theory.In the first chapter, the author gives a brief description about the translation task, which includes background information of the task, requirements for translation put forward by the client, features of the original text and significance of the task. Detailed processes for completing the translation task are stated in chapter two. The third chapter is about the translation theory which guides the author in translation. The translation theory adopted by the author is functional equivalence theory presented by Eugene A. Nida. In this chapter, the author gives a detailed introduction to it and discusses its importance in translation.As the key part of the thesis, chapter four is the case analysis. The author analyzes some typical examples picked up from the translation by using functional equivalence to discuss their translation methods. Firstly, the author analyzes some words translation from the point of lexical equivalence. Secondly, sentences are discussed with the help of syntactical equivalence. Thirdly, the author makes analysis for the text as a whole from the aspect of textual equivalence.In the last chapter, the author makes a summary for the translation task. The author sums up the problems confronting in the process of translation, puts forward translation method for translating the text and states understanding for translation.Translation methods for employee handbook are summarized by author after completing the translation. Meanwhile, the author attaches importance to combining theories and practice during the translation, which improves author's ability of practice. In addition, the author forms a new understanding for translation that is not just concerned with simple language reformulation. In the process, many factors should be taken into consideration and translators also need to enhance their professional quality.
