A Report On The Translation Of The Color Of Character

Novel translation is playing a more and more important role in cultural communication between China and other countries, and has been attached more attention by researchers. The Color of Character, written by Glen Shuld,based on the author's experience, describes the living situation of difference races in the United States. By a memory of the main character's confusion and pain during his growth, the novel illustrates a vivid conflict among races. This journal-type novel focuses on the daily life and work of the white and black people, of which racial conflict has deeply rooted in American society.In this report, the translator conducts within the framework of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory and adopts various translation techniques such as conversion and domestication to assure that the target language is authentic with lexical faithfulness to the source language. Meanwhile, the translator tries to maintain the grammatical and formal equivalence between target and source languages by addition or omission. Moreover, the cultural connotation concerning words and expressions is transmitted for a better acceptance of target readers.In the process of translation, the translator turns to Nida's functional equivalence theory for a guidance to solve the problems in the translation. To translate a novel, the translator is supposed to be aware of the cultural and thought di fferences between Chinese and English. It's proposed that a version of equivalence-based translation work can be achieved by following the Functional Equivalence Theory and various techniques.
